Ceiling Lights 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Buying

Ceiling lights are the foundation of any room lighting plan. Learn how to choose the right ceiling light for every space in your home.

Types of Ceiling Lights

Flush Mounts: Sit close to the ceiling, ideal for low ceilings and hallways
Semi-Flush Mounts: Hang slightly lower, offer more style options
Pendant Lights: Hang from cord or chain, perfect for dining areas and kitchens
Chandeliers: Statement pieces for formal spaces like dining rooms and entryways
Recessed Lights: Built into ceiling for clean, modern look

Choosing the Right Size

Room width in feet = chandelier diameter in inches. For example, a 12-foot wide room needs a 12-inch diameter chandelier. For multiple pendants over a table, each pendant should be about 1/3 the table width.

Height Guidelines

Hang ceiling lights 7 feet from the floor for head clearance. Over dining tables, keep 30-36 inches from surface. In foyers, the bottom of the fixture should be at least 7 feet high or as high as the ceiling allows.

Room-by-Room Guide

Bedroom: Semi-flush or small chandelier for ambient light, add table lamps for reading
Kitchen: Pendant lights over islands, flush mount for general lighting
Bathroom: Flush mount with damp rating, consider vanity lights on each side of mirror
Home Office: Bright overhead light (4000K-5000K) for productivity, add desk lamp for task lighting
